Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity believes that every person deserves a safe and affordable place to live. A related mission is to bring different parts of the community together around making that a reality.

Habitat for Humanity has a variety of housing assistance programs. The main ones include:

  • Home construction
  • Home and roof repair
  • Counseling to improve credit (and opportunities for home ownership)
  • Advocacy for fair housing policies

While a religious organization, Habitat has a non-proselytizing policy. That means they are not there to convert anyone, nor do they require recipients of assistance to be of a particular faith.

The Children's Circus Project

The Children's Circus Project maintains ongoing relationships with groups that service children and adults throughout the country. Their goal is to help foster holiday cheer by providing some of the best community service events Austin has to offer.

These include local circuses, art museums, concerts, and others. Ongoing programs include those that provide:

  • Art instruction
  • School supplies
  • Laptops for e-learning
  • After-school tutoring
  • Transportation to employment
  • Holiday toys
  • Shelter for the homeless

The goal of the Children's Circus Project is to spark curiosity, ignite imagination, nurture creativity, and bolster confidence among those whom they serve.

Wimberley Good Neighbor

With the cost of living increasing, more people are at risk of not making ends meet. According to the U.S. Census, there are approximately 38 million Americans currently living in poverty.

Wimberly Good Neighbor (WGN) provides financial assistance for individuals who need help paying rent or a mortgage, car payments, or utility bills. They provide funds for buying groceries, clothes, school supplies, or other needs. They also have special "Adopt A Family" programs.

Wimberley Good Neighbor (WGN) is a 100-percent volunteer-run charity. That means that no donations go to salaries, fundraising, office space, or other costs. All expenses of the organization are covered by grants, so every cent you give is spent helping individuals in the community who are in crisis.

Austin Independent School District

The Austin Independent School District (ISD) educates almost 73,000 students. It includes 116 diverse school communities in one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas of the country.

ISD's mission is to equip every student with the knowledge and skills to thrive in college or a career, and in life in general. They engage community leaders and partner with world-class universities, businesses, and nonprofit organizations to provide comprehensive educational experiences. An underlying goal is to inspire all students to make a positive contribution to their community.

ISD offers a variety of programs, including digital media, fine arts, world languages, engineering, science and technology, and more. They have a 93.3 percent graduation rate, and their ACT scores exceed both the state and national averages.

Future Farmers of America

Future Farmers of America (FFA) is a dynamic youth organization that helps students attain leadership skills, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. There are currently 1095 FFA chapters in the state.

FFA has a solid history and heritage, but understand that farming is always evolving. For this reason, their focus is not merely on farming and ranching but on developing skills related to:

  • Horticulture
  • Aquaculture
  • Food Sciences
  • Business
  • Accounting
  • Wildlife management
  • Mechanics
  • Engineering

In addition to programming, they provide scholarships to members, give awards, and organize speaking events. FFA also promotes the passage of strong agricultural policies at the local and state levels.

Central Texas Children's Home

The Central Texas Children's Home began in 1969 with the mission of helping troubled boys get a second chance. Since that time, they have devoted their efforts to providing safety for boys and girls impacted by:

  • Abuse
  • Neglect
  • Abandonment
  • Homelessness
  • Trauma

The Children's Home helps the families of these children learn to adjust, adapt, and overcome pain from the past. They also give guidance on creating healthy environments in the present and are a perfect example of ways to give back to the community.

Helping Hand Home for Children

The Helping Hand Home for Children is the oldest continuously operating residential childcare agency in Travis County. It is a priceless resource that is kept strong and viable through generous community support.

Helping Hand provides a safe haven for children healing from physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as various forms of neglect or abandonment. They help children whose young lives were once filled with fear, chaos, and pain learn how to reclaim their childhood. Helping Hand operates a residential treatment program, a therapeutic foster care and adoption program, and a charter school that offers specialty education to two dozen children.

St. Jude's in Austin

St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital is one of the most prominent charity initiatives in Austin and the country. It has a long history of developing cutting-edge treatments to advance cures and prevention for serious pediatric diseases. They are leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening conditions.

At St. Jude's, no child is denied treatment based on the family's ability to pay. Patients never receive a bill, and the hospital also helps cover the costs of travel and housing for many families. For this reason, they rely heavily on the generosity of the community to provide these invaluable, often life-saving services.
